KALAMAZOO -- The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan along with the Detroit Free Press has announced that Western Michigan University men's basketball recruit David Kool is the winner of the 2006 Hal Schram Mr. Basketball Award.
A senior at Grand Rapids South Christian High School, Kool led his team to a 20-1 season this year after winning Class B State Championships in 2005 and 2003. The 2005 Class B Player of the Year shot 59 percent from the field and 88 percent from the free throw line while averaging 29.5 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals per game.
"We are so happy for David to win Mr. Basketball," WMU head coach Steve Hawkins said. "It's an incredible honor to be named the best player in the state of Michigan and everyone associated with our program couldn't be more proud of him. We're very excited to welcome David into the Bronco basketball family."
Kool received 931 points in voting by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. Tom Herzog of Flint Powers finished second with 360 points, followed by DeShawn Sims of Detroit Pershing (329), Johnathon Jones of Okemos (207) and Leon Freeman of Belleville (186).
