KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team will conclude its indoor regular season on Friday at the Grand Valley State Big Meet. The meet begins at 8:30 AM and is being held at GVSU's Kelly Family Sports Center.
SOME OF THE BEST IN THE NATION
WMU has become a recognizable name in track and field over the last few years, and nothing has changed in 2025. The Broncos checked in at No. 24 in the latest Great Lakes Regional poll, up from No. 26 just a few weeks ago.
In terms of specific events, the Brown and Gold have three event groups sitting in the top 100 nationally. First, the 5K group is ranked 30th in the nation, thanks to some outstanding performances from
Lillian Zelasko,
Brooke Soper,
Larissa McGrath and
Lauren Sancrant. That group has an average time of 17:36.69.
WMU has also been spectacular in the 60-meter hurdles, sitting at No. 56 in the nation.
Sandra Ferrari,
Mabinty Kebe,
Angel Pratt and
Jade Celestine have combined for an average time of 8.80. Lastly, Western Michigan's weight throw group of
Bri'Yanna Robinson,
Kennedy Hagens,
Lane Hagens and
Thierry Campbell has been solid all season. They are sitting at No. 76 in the nation with an average throw of 14.80 meters.
KENNEDY'S BIG WEEKEND
Kennedy Hagens has taken big leaps forward in her junior season with the Broncos. That was on full display when she produced a personal-best weight throw mark of 16.39 meters last week and the GVSU Mike Lints Alumni Open. Prior to that meet, Hagens' personal-best mark in that event was 15.96 meters.
So far this season, Hagens has produced a better weight-throw mark in each meet she's competed in. She started the year with a mark of 14.83 meters at the John Flaminio Classic. She then went on to earn a mark of 15.24 meters at the Gerry England Invitational. Following that, she had a throw of 15.96 meters at the Meyo Invitational. That led into her PR throw this past weekend.
GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM
Western Michigan's distance group was honored for their work during the cross country season, collecting United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team honors. To gain the award, teams must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0. The cross country squad was well above that number, holding a cumulative team GPA of 3.74.
Individually,
Lillian Zelasko was named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honoree. To qualify, athletes must have 3.25 cumulative GPA and finished top 25 in their NCAA Regional Championship. Zelasko easily made the mark, as she carries a 3.80 GPA in political science. Back in cross country season, Zelasko placed 21st at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
Track and field wise, the team was just as strong in the classroom. During the fall semester, the squad had a team GPA of 3.55. That included 13 4.00 GPA's and 23 student-athletes with a 3.50 or higher.
