Men's Basketball Prepared for Saturday Battle at Buffalo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball team looks to extend its winning streak to three in a row on Saturday afternoon as it visits Buffalo for a 4 pm tip. The game is set to be broadcast on ESPN3 and the Bronco Media Network

OPENING TIP
  • After picking up a pair of home wins, Western Michigan hits the road on Saturday afternoon to take on Buffalo. 
  • The Broncos are coming off of a come-from-behind 61-57 overtime victory over Akron on Tuesday at University Arena.
  • WMU scored the final six points of regulation and outscored the Zips 11-7 in the extra frame to move to 3-0 in overtime.

THE ROAD AHEAD
After a 2-0 homestand, Western Michigan begins a stretch of three-out-of-four on the road on Saturday afternoon at Buffalo.

LAST TIME OUT
Western Michigan netted the final six points of regulation, then outscored Akron 11-7 in overtime for a 61-57 victory on Tuesday evening. Lamar Norman Jr. led WMU with a game-high 19 points, while Mileek McMillan chipped in 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. With the win, the Broncos improved to 3-0 in overtime games this season. 

CLEANING THE GLASS
The Broncos outrebounded the Zips 48-44 in Tuesday's win, with the 48 rebounds setting a new season high. Western Michigan also secured 17 offensive boards, equaling its season high. Markeese Hastings posted a team-high 11, his 10th double-digit rebounding game of the season, while Mileek McMillan tied his career-best with nine.

MILEEK'S MOVE
Mileek McMillan has made the most of his recent return to the starting lineup, averaging 11.6 points and scoring in double-figures in all five of those contests. The senior is 7-of-13 (.538) from three-point land during this stretch and 17-of-20 (.850) at the foul line.

WMU VS BUFFALO
Saturday's game marks the 34th all-time meeting between Western Michigan and Buffalo. The Bulls own a 20-13 edge in the series, including a 78-64 victory in Kalamazoo back on Jan. 11. The Broncos are 6-11 at Buffalo, and have lost their last seven trips to UB. WMU's last road win over the Bulls was an 85-70 victory on Feb. 1, 2010. 

EARLIER THIS SEASON
Back on Jan. 11 in Kalamazoo, Western Michigan took a one-point lead into the halftime locker room, but saw Buffalo connect on 17-of-25 (68.0 percent) from the floor in the second half on its way to a 78-64 victory. Three Broncos scored in double-figures, with Markeese Hastings and B. Artis White tallying 12 points apiece. Ronaldo Segu led the five Bulls in double-figures with 17 points. 

SCOUTING THE BULLS
Buffalo cruised to its fifth straight win on Thursday, winning at EMU 83-69. UB is averaging 90.2 points per game during its current winning streak, with Jeenathan Williams averaging 19.2 per contest. Williams is fourth in the MAC in scoring at 18.8 per game. 

SCORIN' NORMAN
Western Michigan junior Lamar Norman Jr. sits in second in the MAC at 20.0 points per game, and leads the conference in league play at 21.6 points per contest. His 19 points on Tuesday extended his streak of double-digit scoring games to 23 in a row. Norman is the only player in the conference to have three 30+ point games, and his 13 games of 20+ points are third-most in the conference. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native leads the league with 3.4 made threes per game. 

MAKING HIS MARK
Redshirt sophomore Markeese Hastings ranks in the top-10 of the MAC in several categories as well, including rebounding (2nd, 8.9), offensive rebounding (3rd, 3.2), defensive rebounding (T-2, 5.7) and field goal percentage (10th, .494). In MAC play, Hastings is second in the league at 10.3 rebounds per game, and his 18 rebounds at Toledo on Dec. 29 is tied for the highest single-game total by a MAC player this season.

THE GODWIN HEIGHTS CONNECTION
Former Godwin Heights HS teammates Lamar Norman Jr. and Markeese Hastings are all over the MAC leaderboards and climbing in the national rankings as well. Norman ranks 20th nationally in points per game (20.0), 20th in total points (501), 29th in made field goals (175), 11th in made threes per game (3.4) and 11th in total threes made (84). Hastings sits 32nd in rebounds per game (8.9), 29th in total rebounds (231) and 22nd in offensive rebounds per game (3.2).

355 AND COUNTING
WMU has made at least one three-pointer in 355 straight games dating back to 2011. 

ON THE HORIZON
Western Michigan returns to University Arena on Tuesday evening to face Toledo.
