WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Western Michigan brings back five players from it's 2020-21 squad, led by sophomore guard
B. Artis White. White was the leading scorer for the Broncos last season at 14.3 points per game and was an All-MAC Honorable Mention selection at the end of last year.
Earlier this week, White also earned a Preseason All-MAC Second Team nod from the league's coaches. Also returning for Western Michigan this season are
Josiah Freeman,
Danny Kolp,
Adrian Martin and
Titus Wright.
Second-year head coach
Clayton Bates brought nine newcomers into the fold for this season, with four transfers and five true freshmen added to the mix. Joining the Broncos as transfers this season are
Markeese Hastings (Butler),
Mileek McMillan (Valparaiso),
Lamar Norman Jr. (Duquesne) and
Mack Smith (Eastern Illinois). WMU also brought five true freshmen into the fold, as
Gus Etchison (Arcadia, Ind.),
Shemani Fuller (The Bronx, N.Y.),
Cameron Kimble (Las Vegas, Nev.),
Owen Lobsinger (Flint, Mich.) and
Jack Stefanski (Frankfort, Mich.) make up Western Michigan's incoming freshman class.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Saturday's contest is also the final game for Kalamazoo College before its regular season starts on Tuesday at Elmhurst. The Hornets went 3-5 during an abbreviated 2020-21 campaign and lost their top-three scorers from a year ago. Ty Horky is the leading scorer among returners for Kalamazoo after averaging 6.5 points per game as a freshman last season.
