KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's basketball team got contributions from every member of the roster, and the Broncos defeated the Kalamazoo College Hornets 92-57 in a preseason exhibition game staged at University Arena.
The Broncos saw nearly every member of the 16-man roster enter the game against the Hornets, with 13 of those players putting points on the board. Despite the exhibition nature of the game, the Broncos hit the hardwood with a sense of focus; WMU shot 53.5 percent from the field and used its size advantage to extend possessions, outscoring the Hornets 18-5 in second chance opportunities.
Flenard Whitfield recorded a double-double with team-highs in points (18) and rebounds (10). Joining Whitfield in double-digit scoring was Nate Hutcheson (14), Matt Stainbrook (11), and Demetrius Ward (10). Hutcheson impacted the game in a number of areas, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and one block in 20 minutes of play.
The game also served as the collegiate debuts for first-year players Austin Richie, Hayden Hoerdemann, and Tim Brennan, and the trio did not disappoint. Hoerdemann tied for the team lead with 20 minutes played and ran the point ably, scoring seven points and recording four assists. Richie finished with eight points, including a 4-of-5 mark from the free throw lane, and Brennan knocked down his first collegiate shot late in the second half.
The Broncos were in control of the game from the very outset, jumping on the Hornets with a 15-6 run to begin the game. Whitfield controlled the paint effectively for the Broncos, pouring in seven points and four rebounds in that four-minute span. The starters would come off the floor soon after, but the bench would keep the pressure on the Hornets and run to lead to nearly 20 points. Whitfield would hit another jumper to spark an 11-2 run, and Ward would drill a three to at the 6:11 mark to give the Broncos their biggest lead of the half at 41-15. Shayne Whittington, returning to the line-up after missing the entire 2010-11 season due to injury, tipped a rebound in with 38 seconds remaining, and Dan Loney laid one in on the next possession to give the Broncos a 55-29 lead heading into halftime.
The starters re-took the court for the beginning of the second half and put on an aerial show for the fans. Hutcheson took an alley-oop pass from Mike Douglas on a fast break at the 15:58 mark, grabbing the ball in mid-air and scoring on the reverse lay-up. Whitfield would grab a defensive rebound on the ensuing possession and streak down the court, taking a pass from Stainbrook and throwing down a two-handed dunk. Hutcheson would spark another fast break at the 11:59 mark when he batted away a Keaton Adams jumper in the paint; Hoerdemann would then fire a pass to Stainbrook, who finished with the jumper to give the Broncos a 75-38 lead. WMU would lead by as many as 42 points in the second half, when Hoerdemann connected a 15-foot jumper at the 11:18 mark and a three-pointer on the next possession to make it 80-38.
The final margin would settle at 35 points, as Hoerdemann hit a jumper with ten seconds remaining to set the final score at 92-57.
The Broncos will be back in action on Saturday, November 5 when they host Northwood in the final exhibition game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
