WMU - SDSU In-Game Notes

Pregame

  • Today's game will serve as the regular season opener for both the Broncos and the Jackrabbits
  • The Broncos played two exhibition games last week in order to get ready for the season; they defeated Kalamazoo College 92-57 on Nov. 2 and beat Northwood 78-63 on Nov. 5
  • Today's game is the start of a six-game stretch of games on the road for the Broncos.  They will not play a home game until Nov. 30 against Hope College
  • WMU regurns all five starters from one season ago, and in all will return 10 letterwinners from 2010-11
  • Seniors Demetrius Ward and Flenard Whitfield were both named Preseason All-MAC West in the MAC preseason media poll.  Ward was named Second-Team All-MAC in 2010-11, while Whitfield was an Honorable Mention.
  • Ward was named one of 30 candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which rewards players who succeed in the areas of Competition, Community, Character, and the Classroom.  He is one of only three MAC players to be honored.
  • WMU head coach Steve Hawkins has won five MAC West titles in his eight seasons as head coach, and ranks among the all-time leaders in MAC winning percentage (.619) and overall winning percentage for a MAC coach (.564).

First Half

  • Starters: Ward, Douglas, Hutcheson, Whitfield, Stainbrook
  • SDSU Starters: Wolters, Carlson, White, Callahan, Fiegen
  • Matt Stainbrook scored the first six points for the Broncos, and finished the half with a game-high 19 points. That surpassed his single-game career-high of 18 points, set against Northern Illinois on Jan. 22, 2011.
  • The Broncos went on an 8-0 run in the middle of the first half while trailing 21-16 to take a 24-21 lead. Stainbrook hit four field goals in that stretch, and Dougals added a layup
  • Mike Douglas finished the first half with nine points
  • Broncos shot 7-of-9 from the free throw line

Second Half

  • The Broncos reached their biggest lead of the half at the 13:23 mark, when Demetrius Ward hit a jumper to make it a six-point game
  • Ward had 11 of his 16 points in the game in the second half, going 3-of-6 from the field
  • Flenard Whitfield overcame his foul troubles from the first half to play 14 minutes in the second half with four points and four rebounds
  • Mike Douglas never left the court in the second half, playing all 20 minutes
  • Matt Stainbrook eclipsed both the 20- and 30-point marks in a single game for the first time in his career

Post Game

  • Matt Stainbrook finished with a team-high 32 points; that total is higher than any single-game output for the Broncos in 2010-11
  • Stainbrook's 32 points are the highest single-game total for the Broncos since current assistant coach David Kool scored 39 in the 2009-10 season finale against Akron (3/12/10)
  • Mike Douglas finished with 14 points, his highest total since scoring 28 at Central Michigan in the 2010-11 regular season
  • The Broncos outscored the Jackrabbits 36-31 in points in the paint
  • The Broncos are now 2-1 all-time against South Dakota State
