OXFORD, Ohio - On throw back day at Miami, Western Michigan
men's basketball turned back the clock, defeating the Red Hawks at
Millett Hall for the first time since Feb. 4, 1989. The Broncos came
from 18 points down in the first half to force overtime and emerge
victorious, 73-68, with five players scoring in double figures.
The key stretch for WMU began at the 14:31 mark of the second half
and ran until the 1:53 mark. Ran is the key word as the Broncos used a
29-11 run to go from trailing by 15 points, 51-36, to leading 65-62.
Western Michigan tied the game at 62 on two Demetrius Ward free throws
and took the lead for the first time since 3-2 on Nate Hutcheson's only
field goal of the game, a three pointer from the left wing with less
than two minutes in regulation.
Muhammed Conteh sparked the Broncos in the first half with six
points, finishing with a career-high 10 points. He was one of five
Broncos to score in double figures. Mike Douglas, who finished with 11
points on 5-of-6 shooting with six assists and no turnovers, started the
big run for WMU with a lay up. Conteh followed and then Ward nailed a
pair of free throws. The junior guard, who scored in double figures for
a team best 14th time this season, went 7-for-8 from the charity
stripe. Juwan Howard Jr. came on late for the Broncos, scoring nine of
his 11 points in the second half and overtime, scored on back-to-back
possessions. He nailed a jumper and then came back with a
three-pointer.
Howard's jumper at the 11:43 mark was the first time Western Michigan
trailed by less than 10 points since the 5:36 mark, 29-20. Ward cut
the deficit to four, 54-50, on a three-pointer but Chris McHenry
answered with a three of his own, one of four he made on the night.
Western Michigan scored the game's next six points on back-to-back lay
ups from Ward and Conteh. Douglas brought the Broncos within one on a
Douglas jumper (see YouTube video below). After another McHenry three
Alex Wolf hit a three for the Broncos to get WMU back within one. An
Orlando Williams lay up was followed by a put back from Matt Stainbrook,
who had 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting, leading up to Ward's free throws
that tied the game for the first time.
Julian Mavunga, who led Miami with 22 points, made an off-balance
shot in the lane to tie the game at 65 with 19 seconds left, giving WMU a
chance to win it on its last possession. Ward, who scored 21 points in
a game for the fourth time this season, missed on a jumper, sending the
game into its extra session.
Western Michigan is now 2-1 this
season in overtime games and 9-9 under head coach Steve Hawkins. The
Broncos improved to 7-4 this season in games either decided by one
possession or that ended in overtime. It was not only WMU's first win
at Miami in 22 years but it was also the Broncos' first Mid-American
Conference road win of 2010-11.
The Broncos head back to
University Arena to take on Kent State on Feb. 2 in Kalamazoo at 7 p.m.
The win, coupled with a loss by Northern Illinois at Buffalo and Ball
State at Ohio, moves WMU into second place alone and is one game back of
the Cardinals.
