CLEVELAND -- The Western Michigan men's basketball team continues to rank as one of the top academic programs in the Mid-American Conference as senior David Kool was named Academic All-MAC. The Broncos have had one player on the Academic All-MAC Team for seven years in a row, the longest active streak in the conference by two years. Over the last five seasons, WMU has claimed 11 of the 26 available
Academic All-MAC spots.
Kool, the 2010 MAC Player of the Year, was named Academic All-MAC for the third year in a row. He is the 20th player in conference history to be a three-time recipient. WMU is the conference leader in three-time honorees with seven (Bill
Vanderwoude 1969-71, John Sperla 1970-72, Jim Kurzen 1974-76, Brian Snider 2004-06, Andrew Hershberger 2006-08, Joe Reitz 2006-08, David Kool 2008-10), three more than second place Toledo.
The Broncos have had 20 different players named Academic All-MAC all-time, second most in MAC history.
Kool led the MAC and ranked 12th in the country with 21.6 points per game and 11th in the country in free throw percentage (.897).
The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team are the number that
is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees,
whichever is greater. The Academic All-MAC honor is for a
student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify,
a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have
participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular
sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first
year of residence are not eligible for the award.
