WMU's best scoring chance of the period came around the 16:00 mark from sophomore forward Derek Roehl. Roehl circled around the goal from left to right and fired off a quick shot near the crease. Miami goalie Connor Knapp made the initial save and Roehl tried to poke in the rebound but it was covered up.
The scoring picked up in the second period with each team scoring an unassisted goal off of a turnover. Miami's Carter Camper picked off an erant Bronco pass in the slot to beat WMU goalie Riley Gill on his stick side to give the Redhawks a 1-0 lead at the 2:14 mark.
Western Michigan tied the game, 1-1, at the 13:49 mark when Roehl poke-checked the puck away from a Redhawk defender and pushed the puck past Knapp for his first of the season. Gill made 22 saves in the period, including seven on two penalty kill situations for WMU.
The Broncos and Redhawks traded shots back and forth in the third period with WMU firing off nine and Miami eight but neither could light the lamp as the game went in to overtime.
