Forward Derek Roehl:
On scoring first goal of season:
"It felt good. It's good to get the first one under your
belt and hopefully I'll keep it going."
"I was coming down my wing by the bench, and had my stick in
one lane and switched it last second as he was passing it over to his partner
and their goalie went to poke-check and I gave it a one-hand effort. I kind of
got a luck bounce."
On the overall effort:
"It felt real good. I think we progressed as the game went
on, we got better every period. We really worked hard and hung with the best."
"It was a tough weekend. That's what it's going to take if we're going to
compete with those guys. We've got to play like that every night."
Head Coach Jim Culhane:
On the overall effort:
"I'm really proud of the effort throughout the weekend. With
the number one team in the country coming in, we knew we had to get solid
goaltending and I thought Jerry (Kuhn) did a nice job last night and Riley
(Gill) was tremendous tonight. I'm really proud of our team. I thought we
battled really hard throughout the entire weekend. Even though we don't get the
extra point here in the shootout, I don't think we can have anything to hang
our head about. I thought it was just a great effort against a real good Miami
team."
On the difference from last night:
"The difference in the hockey game from last night to
tonight was the special teams. Last night we created a number of chances on the
power-play. I looked on tape last night and this morning and both teams had
seven grade-A scoring chances. They scored on three, and we didn't score on any
of ours. With that said, we created good chances on our power-play and also
gave up a couple short-handers. I thought the difference was in the special
teams, we just gave up those shorthanded goals last night. That was
uncharacteristic of our team. I think the big thing tonight was again, we
played a consistent hockey game for 65 minutes and I thought we battled hard in
all three zones, and that's the effort we need to have not only this weekend,
but every weekend. For the most part, we've had that. We've done a nice job of
competing against some pretty good teams."
On the effort of offensive players on defense:
"We have to have everybody, in that regard. Whether you're
an offensive player or not, everyone needs to learn how to play defense and
learn how to grind. That continues to be a work-in-progress with our team.
Derek (Roehl) is a good example of that. Max Campbell, J.J. Crew, and Jared Katz, you go along the line of our offensive players, they have to learn how to
grind, too. Play defense, block shots, take a hit to make a play and that's
part of our (the coaches) jobs to get that out of them."
On the defensive effort:
"Not only this weekend, but we try to have that as a team.
We try to create that brotherhood and that bond, with accountability and
responsibility for the guy next door. We talk about taking a bullet for the guy
next to you in the fox-hole and that's what we're trying to get out of our
team. I think that's a good example here this weekend of how we can do that, on
the penalty kill, for us to block shots."
On what was said at the second intermission:
"Just more of the same. Our effort was solid, we made it a
20-minute game against the number one team in the country. We continued to
battle in all three zones, get pucks to the net when you can, and look to crash
the net to get secondary scoring opportunities. It really wasn't much of
anything we said. A lot of our work is done early in the week, and we really
have to get out of the way and let the guys play on the weekend. Again, I'm
proud of the team and our effort."
Goaltender Riley Gill:
On defensive effort:
"I was seeing the puck well tonight. I was getting low and
making sure I saw the puck leave their stick when they were passing it and when
they were shooting it. It seemed to work pretty good for me tonight and if
there was a rebound, our defense was able to take care of it or I was able to
be there for the second save. I just tried to stick to the basics and be fundamentally
square and it worked out."
"Well coach just old us that's how we've got to play all
year long. Even if it's some of the bottom teams in the conference, or a number
one team in the country like tonight, we've got to bring that every night, and
we did tonight. Take that energy and bring it next weekend, and carry it on the
whole season."
"You almost know that as a goalie. They are a very skilled
team and we just try to keep everything in front of us and we were able to have
success tonight and we just gotta take it one shot at a time."
On the crowd reaction:
"It's always nice, you get a little smile, but you've got to
stay focused You just got to concentrate on the next shot especially with
Miami, being the number one team in the country. They were fast and quick but
we kept them to one goal, and I'm pretty proud of it."
