KALAMAZOO - The Western Michigan men's basketball team (5-10, 2-0) picked up its 10th straight Mid-American Conference victory at home with a 70-52 victory over the Toledo Rockets Wednesday night at University Arena. The Rockets' 52 points is the fewest given up by the Broncos all season.

Four Broncos scored in double-digits, including a team-high 14 points from freshman guard Demetrius Ward and 12 points from junior David Kool. Kool sank four three-pointers for WMU who as a team attempted 30 shots from beyond the arc and made just seven.

Freshman forward LaMarcus Lowe chipped in nine rebounds and eight points, including a pair of two-handed dunks over Rocket defenders. On the defensive end, Lowe blocked five shots, which is tied for the most by any player in the MAC this season.

The Broncos and Rockets traded baskets on each of their first possessions, but a nearly eight minute scoring drought for the Rockets and a 22-0 run by the Broncos helped WMU jump out to an early 25-2 lead mid-way through the first half.

When the WMU starters got winded or in foul trouble, there was no drop off when the reserves came off the bench. The Bronco bench outscored the Rocket bench an astonishing 34-4, and when it came to second chance buckets and points off turnovers the Broncos held an edge as well, 20-6 and 24-6, respectively.

Kool knocked down three shots from beyond the arc in the first three minutes of the game and Toledo turned the ball over nine times in the first 20 minutes to help the Brown & Gold to a 35-21lead at the half. Toledo's 21 points is the lowest point total in a half given up by the Broncos all season.

Toledo had a scoring run of its own, 12-1, in the first half with nine of those points coming from senior guard Jonathan Amos. Shawntes Gary countered right back with a pair of back-to-back jumpers to keep the WMU lead secure, 30-14.

The Rockets were led by senior guard Tyrone Kent, who scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but he also turned the ball over six times.

Both teams shot under 40% from the field (WMU ? 35%, UT ? 39%) and from three-point land (WMU ? 23%, UT ? 30%). When it came down to free throws, the Broncos edged the Rockets going 15-for-27 (55%) compared to 6-for-13 (46%) for UT.

Western Michigan will continue conference play with a home contest this Saturday, Jan. 17 against Northern Illinois at 2 p.m.
