KALAMAZOO -- Loyola's J.R. Blount hit a layup with 32 seconds remaining to give the Ramblers the lead and Western Michigan couldn't answer in a 54-51 loss in front of 2,816 at University Arena on Saturday.
Shawntes Gary misseed a three-pointer as time expired and David Kool was called for travelling on the possession prior as the Broncos (1-4) tried to regain the lead in the final moments against the Ramblers (2-2).
Kool lead the Broncos' efforts with 16 points, 11 of which he put up in the second half. Kool went five for five in free throws and put up a three pointer early in the first half. Shawntes Gary also shot 100 percent in free throws, going six for six and put up a total of 12 points for the Broncos. Derek Drews hit a pair of three-pointers on his way to eight points and Donald Lawson pulled down eight rebounds for the Broncos.
The game was a defensive struggle as WMU limited Loyola to 35.7 percent shooting overall and 4-of-14 from behind the arc, while WMU hit just 29.4 percent and 4-of-17 three-pointers. The Broncos were excellent at the line, hitting 17-of-20 (.850), while Loyola hit just 10-of-17 (.588).
Loyola was led by Blount with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Western Michigan is back in action Tuesday night in Huntsville, Texas, as they take on Sam Houston State. The game will not be available on the Bronco Radio Network, but Bronco Insider subscribers can watch live streaming video of the game.
