The Battle Creek Knights, with a roster dominated by former Western Michigan men's basketball players, claimed the inaugural title of the International Basketball League Saturday night in front of nearly 2,000 fans at Kellogg Arena.
The Knights (21-0) defeated the Dayton Jets (15-2) 124-121 in a game that wasn't decided until the final buzzer sounded.
A total of six former Broncos took the floor for the Knights in the championship game, including four of the five starters. Guard Robby Collum (2003), forward Bobby Madison (2004), guard Ben Reed (2005), forward Terrance Slater (2003), forward Mike Williams (2004) and guard Rickey Willis (2005) all played key roles in leading the Knights to an undefeated campaign.
Williams led the Knights with 24 points and Collum netted 16 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter to help the squad rally for the win. Battle Creek native Ben Reed chipped in 16 points.
BC led 68-63 at the half but found itself trailing entering the final quarter. Collum's heroics down the stretch allowed the Knights to tie the score with just over a minute remaining and eventually move ahead for good in the closing seconds. A long 3-pointer by the Jets in the final seconds rattled off the rim the the rebound couldn't be controlled by either team before time expired.
"It feels great to win it. This has been a first-class organization from the start and it's great to bring a championship to Battle Creek," Collum said.
Williams and Madison were both tabbed to the all-star team, but did not participate in the game, which was held prior to the championship matchup.
The IBL features teams from across the country, including San Jose, Calif., and Tacoma, Wash.
