KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan head men's basketball coach Kahil Fennell has announced the hiring of Lucas Monroe as the program's new strength & conditioning coach. Monroe will also assist with other Olympic programs for WMU.
Monroe joins Fennell in Kalamazoo after working alongside him during Fennell's two years at UTRGV. Originally hired in 2014, Monroe worked with the Vaqueros for more than a decade. After serving for three years as the assistant strength and conditioning coach, he was promoted to the program's head strength and conditioning coach in the summer of 2017.
Before heading to Texas, Monroe spent a year at Missouri Southern State, where he served as an assistant strength coach for numerous programs. While at MSSU, he designed the strength and power workouts for track & field and the basic strength and injury prevention programs for cross country. He was also responsible for strength programs for men's golf, cheer and dance, and additionally assisted with all aspects of the football strength and conditioning program.
Prior to MSSU, Monroe was a graduate assistant at Lindenwood, where he was responsible for designing strength, agility and plyometric programs for the lacrosse programs, as well as designing year-round strength programs for wrestling and men's golf. He assisted with numerous other programs, and created profiles using performance tests and body composition for more than 120 student-athletes, while also mentoring seven interns and over 25 student workers. Among his other experience were internships at Washington, Central Missouri and Southeast Missouri State.
Monroe is Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach (RSCC) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He also holds a Level 1 Sports Performance Coach (USAW-L1SP) through USAW and Level 1 Certification through the Functional Movement System.
Monroe graduated from Central Missouri University with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and from Lindenwood University with a master's degree in Human Performance.
