KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan gymnastics team posted a season-high score of 195.850 and handed Ball State its first loss in Mid-American Competition so far this season, at University Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos (9-6, 3-1 MAC) also posted season-high scores on beam and floor to best the Cardinals' final score of 195.625.
Western Michigan started off strong on vault with a score of 48.850, with
Makenna King and Brook Gelesko both posting 9.800's.
Isabella Ciolfi tied for third with a 9.775, while
Kennedy Cooper finished right behind her with a 9.750.
WMU led after the first rotation and moved on to bars, with
Makenna King,
Reese Samuelson and
Julie Korfhage all tying for second place with 9.750's.
The Broncos separated from the Cardinals thanks to their season-best performance on beam. Korfhage posted a career-high score of 9.900 to take second place. It was the first 9.900 in her career and the first by a WMU gymnast this season. Milton finished behind her with a 9.850, while Samuelson and
Reilan Garvey each scored a 9.800. With Ciolfi's 9.775, WMU scored a 49.125.
The team followed it up with a 49.150 on floor, a new season-best. Korfage and Gelesko tied for first place with 9.850's. The score was a new personal-best for Korfhage, while Gelesko's score marked the third-straight meet she scored at least a 9.850. Milton and
Molly Sabin tied for second place with scores of 9.825, with Sabin's score being a new career-high. Cooper tied for third place with a 9.800, while Ciolfi finished with a 9.750.
Western Michigan heads on the road next Friday to Eastern Michigan for a quad meet with the Eagles, Illinois State and Wilberforce at 6 p.m.
