Broncos Return Home Against Bowling Green

KALAMAZOO, Mich -- The Western Michigan Women's Soccer team is returning home for a conference match up against the Bowling Green Falcons. The game is slated to kick off at 1 pm on Sunday, Oct. 4.

LAST TIME OUT
Western Michigan had a historic night against Kent State, winning by a score of 7-1. The seven goals were the most scored in a single game by the program since Sept. 9, 2001. The win pushed the Broncos to a 3-0-1 conference record and a 5-2-4 record overall. The Broncos now hold a 21-1-5 conference record since the beginning of the 2024 season.

It was an all around great game for WMU as all seven Bronco goals were scored by different players; Gracie Lynn, June Mullen, Irelyn Sheldon, Tessa Fagerson, Kaiya Stewart, Olivia Smith, and Arianna Rose.

NEW FACES, SAME RESULTS
The two top point scorers for the Broncos this season, Tessa Fagerson and Kaiya Stewart, both transferred into the program for this season. Fagerson, a DePaul transfer, leads the team with five goals and four assists while Stewart has scored four goals with one assist.

Both players have been on a tear since the beginning of conference play, with Stewart scoring all four of her goals over the last five games. Meanwhile, Fagerson leads the entire MAC in points scored across conference play, with three goals and three assists over the four games played. At 2.25 points per game, Fagerson is the only player in the MAC above two points per game across conference play.

Fagerson and Stewart are having career years thus far, and look to continue the trend throughout the rest of the season.

TOUCHDOWN BRONCOS
It was a historic night for the Broncos at Kent State. The Broncos scored seven goals, marking the most in a single game for WMU since 2001. All seven of the goals came from different players which featured three players getting their first goals of the season; June Mullen, Olivia Smith, and Arianna Rose.

The Brown and Gold weren't done making history there, as in the 50th minute both Tessa Fagerson and Kaiya Stewart scored goals 10 seconds apart from each other. This marked the shortest amount of time in between goals in program history, beating Mary Gignac's personal record of 2 goals in 39 seconds.

Both records the Broncos eclipsed on Thursday came from the same game, a Sept. 9, 2001 match up against Iona.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS
Bowling Green enters Kalamazoo with a 5-1-4 overall record and a 1-0-3 record. Their highlight win of the season came on Sept. 6 when they took a trip to Lexington, Kentucky and beat the University of Kentucky by a final score of 2-1.

The Broncos lead the all time series 19-11-4, with the most recent match between the two programs being the 2025 MAC Championship, in which WMU won.

The Falcons are lead on offense by Emme Butera, who has two goals and two assists over her 10 games played. Bowling Green is an all around offense, as nine different players have recorded at least one goal so far. In net, Payton O'Malley has been a star for the Falcons. She posts a 0.59 GAA across a .800 save percentage through her nine games played.
