KALAMAZOO, Mich -- In a busy weekend for WMU Athletics, the Broncos completed a weekend sweep for the department. After a win against Eastern on Thursday, a victory against Central gave the Broncos bragging rights in the directional Michigan school rivalry.
The Brown and Gold extend their conference leading record to 6-1-1 and an overall record of 8-3-4 and remain unbeaten against Central in Coach
Lewis Robinsons' tenure.
FIRST HALF
After scoring in the second minute against Buffalo and the eighth minute against EMU, the Broncos looked to continue their trend of early offense as
Simone Sharpless would get her first shot attempt of the game just 13 seconds in.
More chances came quickly, as a foul on CMU set the Broncos up with a set piece opportunity that would turn into a shot on goal for
Meredith Vance. The Brown and gold would get two more shots on goal within the first 20 minutes from
Simone Sharpless and
Kaiya Stewart, but they were fended off and the game remained tied 0-0.
In the 15
th minute, CMU would find themselves with a scoring chance as a corner kick set them up in the goalie box, but the WMU defense blocked both attempts. The match stalled a bit from there, but the Broncos would finish the half with eight shots, three of them on net.
The half ended 0-0.
SECOND HALF
Once again, the Broncos started out a half with great energy. In the 46
th minute,
Tessa Fagerson found herself wide open for an unassisted goal to quickly put the Broncos up 1-0 in the second half.
From there, the Broncos continued to play the style of game that got them into first place in the MAC. The WMU defense dominated possession of the ball throughout the entire half. The continued presence in the attacking third would result in another scoring opportunity for the Broncos, where a foul in the box set
Tessa Fagerson up for her second goal of the match off the penalty kick, good for her team leading seventh goal of the season.
With the Broncos controlling the play, they would once more add to their lead in the 78
th minute when
Irelyn Sheldon and
RJ Wagamon became wide-open with a 2-on-1 opportunity, Sheldon would find Wagamon who put the ball in the back of the net for a 3-0 Bronco lead. This was the first collegiate goal for Wagamon.
CMU would finally get a shot off in the 80
th minute, but after a save from Sulaver the Brown and Gold would lock up a 3-0 victory.
