KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Former Western Michigan University men's basketball player Ben Handlogten has been elected to the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame's 2025 class will be inducted in ceremonies at Van Andel Arena this fall, with the date yet to be announced.
A native of Byron Center, Mich., Handlogten came to WMU after earning All-State honors at Grand Rapids South Christian High School. A four-year letterwinner for the Broncos from 1992-96, Handlogten burst onto the scene right away for the Brown and Gold, picking up a MAC All-Freshman Team selection in 1993.
As a senior in 1995-96, Handlogten shot 59.9 percent from the floor, the third-best, single-season shooting percentage in program history. That campaign included a perfect 13-for-13 shooting performance in a victory over Toledo in January, which still stands as Western Michigan's single-game record for field goals made without a miss. He also tied the single-game record for blocks that season, posting seven at Purdue. For the season, he averaged 15.7 points and 8.8 rebounds on the way to an All-MAC First Team selection.
Over the course of his Western Michigan career, Handlogten amassed 1,167 points, 833 rebounds, 142 steals, 116 blocks and 28 double-doubles in 109 games. His career rebound, steal, block and double-double totals, as well as his 53.4 career field goal percentage, all still rank in the top-10 in program history.
Following his WMU career, Handlogten went on to play professionally, making his pro debut for the Grand Rapids Hoops of the CBA in 1996. He played internationally in Turkey, Japan, Italy and Greece, before signing as a free agent with the NBA's Utah Jazz in 2003. With the Jazz, he appeared in 38 games and made five starts over the course of the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.
