Bronco Basketball Signs CEBL Draft Pick Declan Peterson

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball program and head coach Dwayne Stephens have announced the signing of Declan Peterson, a transfer from the University of Calgary. Peterson is the ninth newcomer the Broncos have signed for the 2025-26 season, joining fellow transfers Jalen Griffith, Trey Lewis, Hudson Ward and Justice Williams, as well as incoming freshmen Sharod Barnes (Ypsilanti, Mich.), Brady Swartz (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Camden Thompson (Whitehall, Mich.) and Carson Vis (Byron Center, Mich.).

"Declan is a uniquely gifted big man with his size, footwork, touch around the rim and high basketball IQ," Coach Stephens said. "He can also impact the game defensively with his ability to rebound and challenge shots. We are thrilled that Declan is a Bronco and can't wait to have him on campus!"

Peterson arrives in Kalamazoo after spending the 2024-25 campaign at the University of Calgary, where he started 21 of the 22 games he played in and averaged 8.0 points and 7.2 rebounds while shooting 67.5 percent from the field, the second-best mark in U SPORTS. Peterson helped the Dinos to a Canada West title and a runner-up finish at the U SPORTS Final 8. Following the season, he was selected third overall in the 2025 Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) Draft by the Saskatchewan Rattlers.

Before his time in Calgary, Peterson spent two seasons at Lethbridge College. After appearing in 21 games, starting 12, during his first year with the Kodiaks, Peterson took off during the 2023-24 campaign. That season, he averaged 14.0 points and 10.6 rebounds per contest and connected on 65.3 percent of his field goal attempts.

A native of Bentley, Alberta, Canada, Peterson attended Lacombe High School, where he didn't start playing basketball until his sophomore year. By the time he was a senior, he was helping lead the Rams to a central zone championship.
