NEW CASTLE, Ind. – Former Western Michigan University men's basketball player Tom Cutter is set to be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame's 2026 class will be inducted in ceremonies next March.
A native of Lafayette, Ind., Cutter starred at Lafayette Central Catholic, racking up more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds during his school career. As a senior, he averaged 22.9 points and 21.6 rebounds to lead the Knights to sectional and regional titles and earned numerous All-State honors.
Following his decorated high school career, Cutter came to Western Michigan, where he played four seasons for the Broncos from 1973-77. After averaging 6.2 points and 5.0 rebounds as a freshman in 1973-74, he boosted his totals to 12.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per contest as a sophomore to earn Honorable Mention All-MAC.
As a junior in 1975-76, Cutter averaged a double-double, putting up 12.9 points and 10.6 rebounds and setting a single-season, school record for field goal percentage (64.5 percent) on the way to All-MAC First Team and First Team All-Mideast Region selections. That season, Western Michigan went 25-3, including a 15-1 mark in conference play, on the way to its first outright MAC regular season crown and the program's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In the first round against Virginia Tech, Cutter tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds to help the Broncos secure their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. WMU went on to rank 10th in the final AP poll, the highest ever for a Mid-American Conference program.
Cutter averaged a double-double again as a senior, posting 12.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game for the Brown and Gold. Following the season, he was named to the All-MAC Second Team.
Over the course of his career as a Bronco, Cutter tallied 1,178 points, ranking him 20th on the program's all-time scoring list. He made 59.5 percent of his field goal attempts for the Brown and Gold, which still stands as the program's career record. He also still ranks second all-time at Western Michigan in career rebounds (947) and third all-time in double-doubles (32). He graduated from WMU with a bachelor's degree in accounting and business administration.
Following his Western Michigan career, Cutter was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the eighth round of the 1977 NBA Draft. He instead went on to a career in accounting and banking, most recently as an independent certified public accountant.
Cutter was inducted into the WMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.
