Women's Soccer Set to Battle Eastern Kentucky

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- After a season-opening victory at Northern Kentucky on Thursday, the Western Michigan women's soccer team will look to build on that momentum when it travels to Eastern Kentucky tomorrow afternoon. The game is set for 1 PM and can be seen on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
Western Michigan was able to carry most of the play, leading Northern Kentucky in shots, shots on goal and corner kicks on Aug. 17. In the end, the Broncos would breakthrough late in the game to grab a 1-0 victory.

The first half didn't see any goals, but the Broncos opened things up in the second half. Early in the second 45 minutes, Jen Blitchok had a shot finger tipped over the net. Later in the half, Jenna Blackburn had a shot bang off the right post.

However, in the closing minutes, Abby Werthman's corner kick was placed perfectly in the box, and Blitchok was able to bury it into the center of the net for the winning goal.

SCOUTING THE COLONELS
The Colonels are coming off of a strong 9-7-2 season in 2022. To begin this season, EKU fell to Kentucky on Aug. 17.

The Colonels haven't scored any goals so far this season, and they are looking to replace Maddy Lemery who netted eight goals last season. However, they do return a solid core of goal scorers. Leading the way is Kylie Fitzgerald, who returns after scoring two last season.

Mackenzie Burdick, Maddy Murphy, Maia Ransom and Emma Spivey each had one last season.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
The Broncos will have a trio of captains for the 2023 campaign, as head coach Lewis Robinson tabbed junior defender Mira Pierre-Webster,  senior defender Lexi Nickole and graduate student defender Madison Cotta to lead the team.

MAC PRESEASON POLL
The Broncos were picked to finish second in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll. WMU received three first place votes and one vote to win the MAC Tournament.

The Brown and Gold finished 5-4-2 in conference play last season and last won the Mid-American Conference in 2013. The Broncos' last MAC Tournament title came back in 2015.

TERRIFIC TRANSFERS
The Broncos brought in seven transfers this season, and the team has already started to see the benefits. In the first game of the season, Indiana transfer Jen Blitchok used a beautiful corner kick from Madonna transfer Abby Werthman to net the game-winning goal at Northern Kentucky this past Thursday.
