EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Western Michigan men's soccer team will take on the University of Evansville (3-5-2) in Evansville, Indiana on Saturday at 4:00 PM. The game will mark the team's last match of their four-game road trip where the Brown and Gold have recorded two wins and one tie thus far. Live Stats information is available under the men's soccer schedule.
As Western Michigan concludes its road trip on Saturday, the team is on the verge of capturing program history: The Brown and Gold are one game away from matching last year's best unbeaten streak of 10 games, in which they recorded nine wins and one tie from Thursday, September 1, 2022 - Sunday, October 9, 2022. The program record for the most games without a loss is 11, which has been set twice: first in the 1983-84 season and last matched during the 2017 campaign. The unbeaten streak has garnered national attention as the Brown and Gold earned the NCAA Team of the Week honors on Tuesday.
The Broncos will enter Saturday's matchup with Evansville with a 0-5-1 record in the all-time series. To capture their first win of the series, Western Michigan will have to lock down the Purple Aces' senior Kai Phillip, who is tied with Western Michigan's Charlie Sharp and Dylan Sing for the 17th most goals in the NCAA at seven total on the season.
On the defensive third of the field, WMU will look for its consistent back line, led by Jonathan Robinson, Jaylen Shannon, Will Perkins, and Nick Stone to put on another lockdown showcase. Over the team's last five games, the Broncos have held opponents to 0.4 goals per game after producing four shutouts against Detroit Mercy, Bowling Green, Wright State, and #20 UIC. WMU has held their foes to 0.9 goals per game throughout the season (10 games) and is in search of holding opponents under one goal a game in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.
On the offensive third of the field, Sing will look to extend his program-best record of consecutive matches with a goal for a seventh straight game. Sing's offensive feat has not gone unnoticed, as he was named the College Soccer News Men's National Player of The Week, this past Monday. Sing, now with 24 goals scored during his career, sits one goal away from claiming the title for the fourth most goals in program history. Sing is currently tied with Tom Oatley (2004-07) and Mosen Khani (1979-82) with 24 career goals.
As for Sing's teammate Sharp, he will continue to chip away at Dan Edward's (1991-94) scoring record of 34 career goals on Saturday. Sharp is currently at 30 total goals scored for the Brown and Gold and is five away from setting a new season best in the goal department. Sharp's season best is 11 goals scored in 21 games, which he set last season.
