Men's soccer advances to NCAA second round with shutout of Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Western Michigan University men's soccer team advanced past the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year in a 1-0 shutout over the Clemson Tigers.

The first meeting in program history between the Broncos and Clemson went WMU's way in a scrappy 1-0 win on Thursday evening. For the second straight match, graduate defender Mathieu Beauvain scored the Brown and Gold's lone goal in the victory. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Lindewirth recorded his third shutout of the year, making five saves.

Western Michigan recorded the first shot of the match, but the Tigers quickly responded. Clemson added three shots in only four minutes early in the half. It ended up being the Broncos that found the winning touch with the only goal of the match in the 21st minute. A cross from forward Roni Sylejmani came to Beauvain right in front of the goal line. Beauvain used his left foot to tap the ball into the bottom left corner of the net, giving WMU an early 1-0 lead.

The Brown and Gold fended off a quick attack from the Tigers. Before the end of the first half, Western Michigan faced four shots including two saves for Lindewirth. In the second half it was back and forth on the shot count in the early going. It looked like the Broncos were going to be up 2-0 in the 58th minute as forward Henrik Boer put the ball into the net. But Boer was called offsides, negating the second goal for WMU.

Two more shot attempts came off the Brown and Gold before the offense became all Clemson. The Tigers racked up nine shots and three corner kicks after Western Michigan's last shot of the match. But the Broncos defense held strong for all 26 minutes, earning the 1-0 result to move onto the second round.

WMU heads 30 minutes northeast to take on No. 16 Furman in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Paladins earned the SoCon automatic qualifier spot after a program record 14-1-4 season. Kick-off from Greenville is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23.
