EAST LANSING, Mich. – Multiple team and individual records were broken or tied on Saturday night, as the Western Michigan gymnastics team had its
best score in program history, 196.725, while Michigan State ended up with the non-conference dual meet victory with a score of 197.575.
Junior
Payton Murphy set the program record with an all-around score of 39.400. She scored a 9.900 on bars, 9.850 on beam, and a 9.825 on floor and vault.
The Broncos came out on fire in the first rotation on bars, as Murphy had the 9.900,
Sarah Moravansky and
Dani Petrousek recorded a 9.850, and
Molly Freeman and
DonnaKathryn Roy each scored a 9.825.
The bars total of 49.250 ties the program record set at Temple on March 4, 2000.
Next up on vault, freshman
Cassie St. Claire and Murphy led WMU with scores of 9.825. Moravansky recorded a 9.800, and
Josephine Thomas had a 9.775.
On floor,
Carissa Ludwig and Moravansky had a 9.875, and WMU finished with a 49.175.
The Broncos absolutely showed out on beam. They delivered a
program record team score of 49.325. The previous record was 49.175. Junior
Amanda Gruber tied the school beam record after a performance that earned her a 9.950. Also on beam, freshman
Rylee Gallmeyer had a career-best 9.925, and junior
Josephine Thomas delivered a 9.875.
"It was a complete team effort tonight," said head coach
Penny Jernigan. "We have been dealing with injuries and illnesses the past few weeks, and have had to make a lot of lineup changes. Tonight we had several freshmen really step up. Molly set the tone with her lead off on bar routine, Rylee on beam and Cassie on vault. Incredible team start on bars. Complete team effort."
WMU's overall team score of 196.725 shattered the previous program record of 196.225 set early this season against Bowling Green.
The Broncos return home on Sunday, March 13 for Senior Day against Kent State at 1 p.m. inside University Arena. WMU will honor seniors
Carissa Ludwig and
Tess Abbott.
