KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan University gymnastics team set a program record in team scoring, and junior
Payton Murphy posted the program's best ever all-around score (39.375), as the Broncos defeated Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green, 196.225-192.725, inside University Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos (2-0) got off to a scorching start on the vault, registering a team score of 49.000, led by event winner
Sarah Moravansky. She posted a score of 9.875, while
Ronni Binstock and Murphy scored 9.800.
On bars, Murphy came out on top with a 9.825, while
Halle Faulkner and
Molly Freeman finished two and three, respectively, with scores of 9.775 and 9.750. Moravansky had a performance of 9.750, and
Margo Van Linden registered a 9.700.
The Broncos had an incredible performance on the beam, led by freshman
Rylee Gallmeyer, who won the event after scoring a 9.875.
Josephine Thomas and Murphy each had a 9.825, while Faulkner and
Amanda Gruber each scored 9.800. It was the third-best team score on the beam in program history (49.125).
The dominance continued on the floor, as the Broncos again posted the third-best score in the event in program history (49.300). The routines were highlighted by performances from Binstock (9.900) and Murphy (9.925).
Faulkner finished with an all-around score of 39.125.
"We have such great chemistry as a team. We have nine freshmen, but it brings our upperclassmen and entire group together. It's a great mix unlike any other. And it's always fun to end on floor when we bring so much energy," said Murphy. "Today's performance was unbelievable. I think it was a perfect day that I was able to break an individual record, and as a group break a team record. It was the ultimate win-win."
Up next, Western Michigan travels to Eastern Michigan for a quad meet between the host Eagles, Ball State and Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.
