KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Senior
Jannik Opitz broke his second program record as the Western Michigan men's tennis team picked up its third win in three days, beating Youngstown State 7-0 at West Hills Athletic Club on Sunday afternoon.
Opitz and fellow senior
Zac Faveri won at No. 1 doubles over Vasilis Vardakis and Erik Gran, 6-1, to give Opitz the WMU career record for doubles wins with 112. He breaks
Casey Cullen's record that was set back in 2011.
Shortly after the first doubles victory, the duo of
Arjun Honnappa and
Fynn Lohse defeated David Moreno and Joao Garretto, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point.
Joaquin Caballer and
Benjamin George also picked up a win over Asier Ibanez and Laurentiu Mandocescu, 6-2.
Opitz improved to 10-1 in singles play after defeating Vardakis 6-4, 6-1. Freshman
Brogan Pierce was WMU's second finisher, remaining undefeated in singles play after beating Moren 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5. Pierce now leads the team with 11 wins. For the second time this season Lohse bumped up to No. 2 and came away with a 6-0, 6-1 day over Mandocescu. George beat Ibanez 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6, while
Jackson Boone won against Erik Gran 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3. Honnappa closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Garretto at No. 4 to improve to 10-1 in singles play.
Western Michigan opens Mid-American play on Friday on the road at Ball State at 2 p.m. and then head to Toledo for a showdown on Sunday at 2 p.m.
