KALAMAZOO, Mich. – It is with great sadness that the Western Michigan hockey program and head coach
Andy Murray can announce the passing of Ken Dickie.
Dickie, age 86, died peacefully on March 16 in the comfort of his home. He was an integral part of the hockey program, serving as Volunteer Director of Alumni Relations and Special Events Coordinator. He was in charge of planning the annual Bronco Hockey Alumni and Friends Golf Outing, active in planning events for the Blue Line Club, wrote a monthly newsletter that was sent out to WMU Hockey alums.
"I speak for all Bronco Hockey alumni, our present team and the friends and supporters our program when I say how saddened we all were with Ken's passing last week," said Murray. "Our condolences go out to his wife Ruth and family. Very simply put, Ken was a great man. He was intelligent, witty, compassionate and willing to do anything for others. His work in uniting all Broncos will be his legacy. Thank you Ken for your leadership and most imporantly, friendship. We are all better for having known you.
Ken was inducted into the WMU Hockey Ring of Honor in July of 2019 for his dedication to the program and was also named the W Club Man of the Year in 2016. His work with WMU Hockey stretches all the way back to the 1960's when, as a referee, he came to know coaches Harry Lawson and Ed Edwards during the program's club years. Dickie was the voice of the Bronco hockey team on WMUK from 1979-82, when WMU's radio station stopped broadcasting games. After that, he was a season ticket holder and a Bronco Blue Line Club member until his retirement from Westerns Michigan University in 1992.
Ken is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ruth, their three children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
