Chippewa Invite Champions

Women's Golf | October 22, 2019

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team claimed the Chippewa Invitational title on Tuesday after finishing four strokes ahead of Bradley at the Birmingham Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.

WMU battled tough conditions to shoot a 313 to finish with a two-round total of 613 (+37). The Braves took second in the field of 13 teams with a 617 (+41). Grand Valley State took third place at 618 (+42), while Northwood and Toledo both shot 629 (+53) to round out the top five. The Broncos led the tournament in pars with 99 and birdies with 17.

"To win today shows something special about this group of players," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "Conditions were really tough and they fought hard all the way until the end. Each one of them contributed and is an important part of this team. I'm so happy for them. It's a great way to end the fall season."

This is the third tournament the Broncos have won as a team under Swartout-Mosher, twice winning the Low Country Invitational.

Individually, the Broncos were led by senior Jasmine Chee. The Hong Kong native shot a 76 on the day to finish at 150 (+6) after recording 23 pars and four birdies in the tournament. GVSU's Katie Chipman claimed the medalist spot after finishing with a 141 (-3). Sophomore Fiona Wang and freshman Alissa Fish tied for seventh place after finishing with 153 (+9). For Fish, it marks the third straight tournament she has been tied as or WMU's second finisher. Sophomore Brooke Gibbons finished with a 157 (+13), while classmate Imogen Courtney finished with a 165 (+21).

The Broncos are done with competition for the fall/winter until they head down to Lakewood, Fla., for the annual Mid-American Conference Match Play Challenge hosted by Bowling Green on Feb. 3-4.
