KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team is set for its second road trip of the spring slate, traveling south for three matches in Texas. WMU is scheduled to play two matches in College Station, Texas at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event, facing No. 9 Texas A&M and the winner of California/No. 16 Virginia Saturday-Sunday. On Monday, Jan. 27, the Broncos head to Houston, Texas to matchup with Rice.Â
Saturday's match versus the Aggies is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. (ET) from the Mitchell Tennis Center. Depending on Saturday's outcome, the Broncos will play at noon (ET) with a loss or at 3 p.m. (ET) with a win on Sunday facing either Cal or Virginia. At Rice on Monday, doubles will start at noon (ET). Â
Last Time Out
The Broncos traveled to Iowa City, Iowa for their first road dual-meet of 2019 last weekend, falling 6-1 at the University of Iowa. Kennosuke Nouchi earned the sole point for the Brown & Gold, winning 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 while improving his singles record to 7-3 overall on the season.Â
Bronco Notes
- Peter Kuszynski leads WMU with a singles record of 15-4.
- Bronco doubles pairs of Kuszynski/Jack Randall and Lenhard Haupt/Jannik Opitz share the team-lead in doubles victories with nine each.Â
- WMU opened the spring season with a pair of 7-0 victories over UIC Jan. 13.Â
Matchup:
- The meeting between Western Michigan and Texas A&M, either Virginia or Cal, and Rice will mark the first ever meetings between the two programs.Â
- Texas A&M opened its season with a 7-0 victory over Abilene Christian last Sunday. The Aggies are coming off a season in which they earned first ever outright SEC Championship, going 12-0 in conference play before reaching the NCAA Semifinals, falling 4-3 to No. 1-ranked Wake Forest.Â
- Virginia opened 2019 with wins over William & Mary and Louisville. The Cavaliers earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last season and fell in the second round versus Columbia.Â
- Cal-Berkeley fell 4-3 to No. 20-ranked Florida State in its dual-match opener. During the fall season, the Bears had its top doubles pair of Yuta Kikuchi and Jacob Brumm reach the semifinals of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.Â
- Rice 2-0 in 2019 with a pair of 7-0 victories over Incarnate Word and Prairie View A&M. The Owls are set to face UT-Arlington and UT-Rio Grande Valley over the weekend prior to facing the Broncos on Monday.Â
