WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches at Purdue on Friday and Saturday, falling to the Boilermakers 4-3 and to Yale 6-1.
In Friday's loss to Purdue, the Broncos battled to the very end. WMU started off strong by taking the doubles point in dramatic fashion.
Ashton Adesoro and
Jack Davison tied things up at 1-1 with a 6-4 win at No. 3 over Nikoa Jovic and JD Velasquez. This left it all down to WMU's
Alex Antonopoulos and
Oscar Corwin at No. 1 against Maj Premzl and Stefan Simeunovic. Antonopoulos and Corwin took the point after a 7-6 (7-4) victory.
The doubles win pushed Adesoro's total win total at Western Michigan to 100.
Purdue tied it up at 1-1 with a win by Henrick Villanger over Antonopoulos 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. Velasquez then gave the Boilermakers a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win over
Chen-Hui Ho at No. 4. Corwin tied the match up at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5. Adesoro gave the Broncos the lead back, 3-2, after a 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 55 Nour Fathalla at No. 1. The match was then tied at 3-3 after Simeunovic defeated Riedel 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. The match came down to the No. 6 singles match between the Broncos' Davison and Purdue's Jacob Lee. Lee took the first set 6-4, but Davison countered with a 6-3 win in the second. Lee claimed the match point after a 6-3 victory in the third set.Â
Against the Bulldogs, Western Michigan's lone point came from Davison at No. 5 singles. He defeated Ethan Chung 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-6), with all other Broncos falling in two sets.Â
Western Michigan wraps up its long road trip on Friday at Michigan, with first serve coming at 5 p.m.Â
