KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team seeks its first win in the NCAA Tournament in school history this Saturday, May 12 as the Broncos travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face the 25th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the first round. The dual match is set to begin at 10 a.m. at Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.

The Broncos claimed the three seed in the Ann Arbor regional while Notre Dame owns the two seed. On the other side of the bracket is top-seed and host Michigan (15th overall) and No. 4 seed Cleveland State. Â The winners of the two matches will meet on Sunday, May 13 with a trip to the NCAA quarterfinal on the line, which would be played at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
In its 12th championship appearance, this will be the first time that Western Michigan has ever meet the Irish. Notre Dame was one of 33 at-large picks selected to compete in the 64-team tournament with an 18-13 overall record and finished in the top-four of the ultra-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Brown & Gold enter the tournament with an impressive resume as the Broncos are 22-4 overall, making them one of 16 teams in the field of 64 with 20+ wins, and are riding an 11-match winning streak, which is tied for the third longest active winning streak in the country. WMU went a perfect 7-0 in the Mid-American Conference regular season, winning their 24th conference title and then picked up two more wins in the tournament to claim the program's 12th tournament title.
Western Michigan is led by senior
Maik Steiner who was recently tabbed as the MAC Player of the Year. Steiner has been the No. 1 player all season and is 30-9 in singles play with a 17-5 record at the one spot. He also enters Saturday riding a 10-match winning streak. All-MAC First Team performer
Jannik Opitz has won his last 12 matches and is also 30-9 in singles with a 9-2 record at No. 2. Junior
Matej Svjetlicic is the last Bronco with 30 wins on the season as he owns a perfect record of 12-0 at No. 6. All-MAC Second Team performers of
Lenhard Haupt and
Kennosuke Nouchi also look to lead the Broncos against Notre Dame.
The Bronco duo of juniors
Eric Olivarez and
Nick Schnobel have led the team in doubles play all season as the two are 19-7 overall together. The pair enter the contest on a four-match winning streak and are 10-1 at No. 2. Nouchi and Opitz have been the primary duo at the one this season as they are 6-3 together at the spot.
