Opitz helped the Western Michigan men's team claim its 12th MAC Tournament title this past Saturday as the No. 1-seeded Broncos took down No. 2 Buffalo, 4-2, on their home court. The sophomore served as the match clincher at two singles after he defeated Villhelm Fridell in three sets to earn Tournament MVP. The victory is the 12th straight for Opitz as he is now 19-4 overall during dual matches and 30-9 overall this season.
The award is also coming shortly after the sophomore was named All-MAC First Team on Wednesday morning and is the third conference weekly nod of the season. Opitz was named singles player of the week back on Jan. 24 and earned doubles team of the week on April 11 with teammate
Kennosuke Nouchi.
As a pre-business major, Opitz has an impressive cumulative grade point average of 4.0.
Opitz and the rest of the Broncos now prepare for the NCAA Tournament as WMU travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face No. 24 Notre Dame on Saturday, May 12 in the opening round.
