CLEVELAND – The 2018 Mid-American Conference Champions Western Michigan men's tennis team produced three student-athletes to the Academic All-MAC team, as sophomore
Kennosuke Nouchi, junior
Eric Olivarez and sophomore
Jannik Opitz earned the award.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
A total of 23 student-athletes were named to the team from this past season. Toledo place seven on the 2018 team while Northern Illinois and Binghamton followed behind with four each.
Kennosuke Nouchi | Sophomore | Pre-Management | 3.59 GPA
Nouchi, an All-MAC Second Team member, is 11-11 overall in singles at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles, including 4-3 in the MAC, and a 15-7 overall record at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, including 3-2 in the MAC. During the season, Nouchi also earned MAC Doubles Team of the Week with sophomore teammate Opitz back on April 11.
Eric Olivarez | Junior | Accountancy | 3.62 GPA
For the second consecutive year Olivarez has garnered the award after the junior went 22-12 in singles during the season with a 15-6 record during dual matches, playing at primarily the five spot where he went 10-4. Olivarez went 4-3 against his MAC opponents and him and partner
Nick Schnobel led the Broncos all season in doubles competition. Together the two went an impressive 19-7 overall with a 10-1 stint at No. 2 and a perfect 6-0 record in MAC play. The two were also named MAC Doubles Team of the Week back on Feb. 28.
Jannik Opitz | Sophomore | Pre-Business | 4.00 GPA
The sophomore was named All-MAC First Team with a 30-9 overall singles record and a 19-4 spring record and is riding a team-high 12-match winning streak. Opitz has played primarily at No. 2 and No. 3 singles for the Broncos during the season and posted an impressive 7-0 record at No. 2 against MAC opponents. He also played at one, two and three doubles with a 15-7 overall record and was named Tournament MVP after serving as the match-clincher against Buffalo at two in the championship match. During the season, Opitz also garnered two MAC weekly honors.
Nouchi, Olivarez, Opitz and the rest of the Broncos gear up for the first round of the NCAA Tournament this Friday, May 12 as they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face No. 24 Notre Dame at 10 a.m. at Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.
