Men's Tennis Set to Host MAC Invite

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team is set to host the 2018 Mid-American Conference Invitational this weekend from Friday, Nov. 9 through Sunday, Nov. 11 at West Hills Athletic Club, the final tournament of the fall for the Broncos. Entrance to all home WMU tennis events is free of charge.

Competition will begin with all three flights of doubles, along with a fourth three-team round robin flight. Doubles will be played as an eight-game pro set for the tournament, with action beginning on Friday at 1 p.m.

Seven flights of singles will be played through Saturday-Sunday. The first two rounds will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the final round at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Other teams participating this weekend are MAC counterparts in Ball State, Binghamton, Buffalo, Northern Illinois and Toledo.

The Broncos are coming off the ITA Midwest Regionals Oct. 18-22 at the University of Notre Dame. WMU was led by the freshmen duo of Peter Kuszynski and Jack Randall, who reached the doubles semifinals. The pair had a strong showing at the tournament, finishing 4-1 while defeating pairs from Toledo, Illinois, Marquette, and Michigan before coming up one win short of the finals.

During the 2017 MAC Invite, the Brown & Gold stole the show, winning four singles flights. The Broncos went 22-8 in singles throughout the tournament while Lenhard Haupt, Kennosuke Nouchi, Jannik Opitz and Nick Schnobel were all crowned champions of their respective flights.

Heading into the final weekend in the fall before dual match season starts in January, Kuszynski leads the team in singles with a 10-3 record, followed by a 9-2 mark from Zac Faveri. Doubles pairs of Kuszynski & Randall and Haupt & Opitz lead WMU with seven wins each.
