NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team concluded day one of the Bobby Bayliss Invitational on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Broncos finished the day with a 5-4 overall singles record before going 3-5 in doubles play.Â
In singles play, nine Broncos competed with
Jannik Opitz,
Lenhard Haupt,
Eric Olivarez,
Jack Randall, and
Zac Faveri.Â
Opitz defeated Verdu from Marquette 6-3, 6-4 for his third win of the season. Haupt improved to 5-1 with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Broadus from Notre Dame. Olivarez picked up his third win of the year, defeating Shisler from Michigan State 6-1, 6-2. Randall won 6-2, 7-5 over Gota from Notre Dame for his fifth-straight victory, and Faveri won 7-5, 7-5 over Wesbrooks from Louisville, his fourth consecutive win.Â
During doubles competition, three pairs of Broncos had two matches each. The duo of Opitz and Haupt led the way with two wins. They took down Shisler/Rakic of Michigan State 6-0 prior to a 6-1 victory of Snezkho/Okonkwo from Iowa, improving their record to 4-0 on the season. Olivarez and Schnobel defeated Smrek/Heredia from Marquette 6-2.
The Broncos continue action at the Bobby Bayliss Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 6, for day two of the tournament, with matches beginning at 8 a.m.
