EARLIER THIS WEEK
After a 4-1 win in an exhibition over Lethbridge, Western Michigan dropped its regular season opener to Bowling Green, 6-2, on Tuesday night.
WMU initially took the lead on a power play goal by
Austin Rueschhoff at 14:22 after he deflected in a shot by
Corey Schueneman on the power play.
Dawson DiPietro also picked up the first of his two assists on the night as the Broncos led 1-0. The lead didn't last long with Tim Theochardis scoring a short-handed goal at 16:18 and Connor Ford tallying on the power play to give BGSU a 2-1 lead after the first 20 minutes.
The Falcons scored again just 3:49 into the second period to go up 3-1 but
Josh Passolt pegged one back for Western Michigan at 9:57 to cut the lead to 3-2. DiPietro passed the puck across the zone to
Drew Worrad and the freshman forward found Passolt open in the slot for WMU's second power play goal of the game. The assist was Worrad's first career point.
Bowling Green added three more goals in the third period, including an empty-net goal with 1:43 left to go in the game. WMU outshot BGSU 36-19 on the night, but Falcon goalie Ryan Bednard made a season-high 34 saves.
