KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan baseball team will look to win its fourth straight Mid-American Conference (MAC) series as Ohio comes to town for the Broncos final home series of the season.
The teams will first play at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 13 and then at 1 p.m. on both Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15. The Sunday ball game will be senior day, honoring Drew Farmer, Pat Haynes, Mitchell Ho, Hunter Prince and Derek Schneider.
WMU comes in at 15-28 overall and 8-10 in the MAC, placing the team in a tie for sixth place with Central Michigan and Toledo. Ohio comes in at 21-25 overall and 6-12 in the MAC.
The pitching staff is led by junior Keegan Akin, who is chasing WMU history. Akin needs just one strikeout to set the single season strikeout record of 100, passing Pat Misch's record of 99 set in 2003. This season, Akin leads the team in innings (77.1), strikeouts (99), ERA (1.98) and opposing batting average (.201) and his strikeout total is seventh in the nation. Sophomore relievers Jake Bartels and Jacob Piechota have been pitching well as of late, as Bartels hasn't given up a run in 6.2 innings and Piechota has given up just one earned run in his last 9.0 innings. He also earned a win and save in last weekend's series with Miami.
Offensively, the team is batting .272 and .293 in MAC play, which is good for third in the conference. Freshman Connor Smith leads the team in batting average (.327) and has been a huge threat in his last 12 games, batting .491 (26-for-53) with nine multiple hit games in those last 12 games. Junior Grant Miller is batting .326 and leads the team in hits (56) and RBI (27) while sophomore Evan Nelson is batting .314 and leads the team with three home runs. Senior Hunter Prince is batting .275 and leads the team with 10 doubles and is second with 21 RBI.
