Baseball Places League-High 14 on Academic All-MAC Team

CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference has announced the 2025 Baseball Academic All-MAC Team, with Western Michigan totaling a league-high 14 honorees. This marks the sixth straight season the Broncos have placed double-digit student-athletes on the Academic All-MAC Team.
 
The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who excel in both athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
 
Turner Doran • Senior • Marketing • 3.52
Voted WMU's Relief Pitcher of the Year after posting a team-best 4.21 ERA in 25.2 innings across 16 appearances. Finished tied for third on the team with 30 strikeouts. Picked up a 3.0-inning save to secure a series victory at Northern Illinois and tossed 3.0 scoreless frames on May 3 against Central Michigan to pick up the win as the Broncos finished off a series sweep.
 
Jake Gernon • Graduate Student • Sport Management • 3.92
Appeared in 11 games on the mound for the Brown and Gold. Struck out three over 3.0 scoreless innings in his lone start of the season against Valparaiso. Induced a game-ending double play to seal the victory at Notre Dame and earn his first collegiate save.     
 
Brendan Harrity • Redshirt Senior • Sport Management • 3.70
Started all 50 games he played on the left side of the infield for Western Michigan. Batted .257 for the year, .279 in conference play, with a .332 on-base percentage. Totaled 26 runs, five doubles, a pair of home runs, 24 RBIs, three stolen bases and was second on the team with four sacrifice bunts.    
 
Matt Hoover • Junior • Sport Management • 3.53
Covered 17.2 innings in his 15 appearances out of the Western Michigan bullpen. Was one of four Broncos to tie for the team lead with three wins. Picked up his first victory of the season in the series-opening comeback win at NIU, then collected the win in both victories over Valparaiso.
 
Cooper Hums • Sophomore • Biomedical Sciences • 3.43
Saw action in 37 games and made 17 starts in the outfield for the Brown and Gold. Recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 39 chances and had one outfield assist. Made several appearances as a pinch runner as well, totaling 10 runs scored and four stolen bases.    
 
Tanner Mally • Sophomore • Advertising & Promotion • 3.84
CSC Academic All-District selection who started all 50 games he played in, primarily in center field. Batted .356, fifth-best in the MAC, with a team-leading .444 on-base percentage. Also led the Broncos in hits (73) and runs scored (50), and was second on the team in both steals (16) and doubles (11). Named to the All-MAC Defensive Team after recording a .973 fielding percentage with five outfield assists.
 
Michael Maloney • Senior • Sport Management • 3.55
CSC Academic All-District selection who played in 45 games and started 44, primarily on the left side of the infield. Batted .304 for the season, .318 in conference play, with a .406 on-base percentage and ranked second on the team with 37 RBIs. Late in the season, put together a 16-game hitting streak, the longest by a Bronco during the 2025 campaign.  
 
Grady Mee • Junior • Supply Chain Management • 3.92
Was the lone Bronco to start all 51 games, primarily playing second base. Batted .284 for the season with a .438 on-base percentage, the second-highest mark on the team. Led the conference with 26 stolen bases, tied for the fifth-most in a season in WMU history.  
 
Dylan Nevar • Redshirt Senior • Electrical Engineering • 3.91
Named a CSC Academic All-District selection for the third straight year after starting 50 games in the outfield and hitting .301 with a .395 on-base percentage. Was named Team MVP after leading Western Michigan in home runs (9), doubles (13), RBIs (49) and slugging percentage (.539). Set WMU records for career RBIs and total bases this season, and hit his 38th career home run on Senior Day, tying him for the all-time program record.
 
Connor Ostrander • Junior • Supply Chain Management • 3.79
Played in 50 games and earned 45 starts, primarily serving as WMU's right fielder. Batted .252 overall and boosted that mark to .290 in conference games. Drew a team-leading 30 walks on the way to a .390 on-base percentage. Scored 19 runs, drove in 23 and finished third on the Broncos with 10 doubles.
 
Lucas Rick • Redshirt Junior • Supply Chain Management • 3.67
Played in 46 games and started 41, primarily as Western Michigan's designated hitter. Posted a .275 batting average with a .369 on-base percentage and a .477 slugging percentage. Ranked second on the Broncos in home runs (7), tied for third in RBIs (29) and was fourth in doubles (9).
 
Joe Shapiro • Redshirt Senior • Accountancy (Master's) • 4.00
Made a team-leading 20 appearances out of the Western Michigan bullpen. Worked a total of 33.1 innings and racked up 16 strikeouts. Pitched a season-high 4.0 innings and collected three strikeouts to earn the win in a sweep-clinching victory over Akron.     
 
Avery Thielman • Junior • Supply Chain Management • 3.51
Started all 47 games he played in at first base. Posted a .280 batting average, .289 in conference play, with a .405 on-base percentage. Drew 29 walks, second-most on the team, and tied for third with 29 RBIs.
 
DJ Thompson • Junior • Sport Management • 3.60
Totaled 19 appearances, including one start, for the Broncos. Tied for third on the team with 30 strikeouts in his 34.0 innings of work. Led Western Michigan with three saves, picking up saves in MAC play against Akron and at NIU, and closing out the victory over Northwestern. Earned the win for the Senior Day victory against Ohio.
