Box Score 2 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Western Michigan baseball team won its fifth straight game as junior Keegan Akin extended his scoreless inning streak to 22.2 in the Broncos 2-0 win over Butler, but WMU fell to Bradley 16-5 in the second game of the day to end the winning streak.
Akin (2-2), who has now dropped his season ERA to 0.96, pitched 6.2 innings allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out eight batters. Akin retired the 11 of the first 12 batters he faced. Freshman Jack Szott entered to throw the final 2.1 innings scoreless earning his first career save.
The Broncos (6-13) got on the board early with a run in the top of the second inning off one hit and the help of one Bulldog error. Steve Pastora reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and Jesse Forestell drove him in on a double.
WMU added another run in the top of the fourth inning off two hits by Grant Miller and Pastora. Miller led it off with a bunt single and Hunter Prince moved him over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Pastora ripped a single to right field to plate Miller and put the Broncos up 2-0.
Miller finished 2-for-4 while Pastora and Forestell each added a hit and an RBI. Each team had four hits apiece and the Bulldogs drew two walks and the Broncos drew one.
In game two, the Braves scored nine unanswered runs including a big five-run top of the fifth inning. The Broncos made it 9-2 with two runs in the top of the fifth. Connor Smith reached on a throwing error by the first baseman and Nick Vogelmeier drew a one-out walk. Miller hit a big two-run double to left field to score both runs, which were both unearned.
After the Braves added two more runs in the top of the sixth, WMU cut into the deficit with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tanner Allison hit a one-out single to shortstop and Smith followed that with a single to right field. Conner Henderson hit an RBI single to right field to make it 11-3 and then came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 11-4.
After the Braves added five more runs in the top of the ninth, the Broncos didn't go down without a fight scoring one more run in the bottom of the ninth inning Alex Goodwin hit a one-out triple and was driven in on Andrew Stone's RBI groundout to shortstop.
Senior Derek Schneider suffered the loss, going 4.1 innings allowing nine runs on eight hits while freshman Eddie McWilliams entered to pitch a scoreless 2.0 innings allowing just one hit.
WMU will play one more game with Bradley and Butler throughout the weekend, starting with the Braves on Saturday, March 26 at 3:30 and ending the weekend against the Bulldogs on Sunday, March 27 at 3:30 p.m.
