KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Coming off a four-game sweep of Bowling Green, the Western Michigan baseball team will travel to face nonconference opponents Butler and Bradley in four total games spread out through the weekend.
The Broncos (5-12) will first take on Butler (6-12) at the Bulldogs home field on Friday, March 25 at 3 p.m. and will play a second game that night against Bradley (9-7) at 7 p.m. on a neutral field. On Saturday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m., the Broncos will face the Braves once more at Butler's home field before taking on the Bulldogs on Sunday, March 27 at 3 p.m. at Butler's home facility.
The Broncos, who are currently tied for the third best fielding percentage (.985) in the NCAA, come into this weekend after allowing a total of seven runs in four games including two shutouts over Bowling Green. As a team, WMU has a 5.05 ERA and is led by junior sensation Keegan Akin (1-2), who leads the team in innings (31.0), strikeouts (39), opposing batting average (.194) and ERA (1.16). He is also first in the MAC in ERA and second in strikeouts. Freshman Jack Szott, who has 18.2 innings out of the bullpen, has a 2.41 ERA and 11 strikeouts.
The offense is led by four players who bat over .300 this season in senior Drew Farmer (.360), junior Grant Miller (.357), junior Nick Vogelmeier (.339) and sophomore Evan Nelson (.317). Miller in fifth in the MAC in batting average and leads the team with 70 at-bats, 25 hits and 13 RBI and is riding a 16-game hitting streak. Farmer is coming off a 5-for-6 game with two runs and two RBI against the Falcons and Vogelmeier has five multi-hit games this season.
