Box Score DENVER – No. 3 Denver scored three goals on the power play and added an insurance goal late in the third period as the Western Michigan hockey team fell, 4-2, at Magness Arena on Saturday night.
The Pioneers handed WMU (3-2-1, 0-2-0-0 NCHC) its second loss of the season after outshooting the Broncos 35-25. Western Michigan picked up goals from Sheldon Dries and Matheson Iacopelli, while Trevor Gorsuch made 31 saves in the loss.
Denver got on the board late in the first period on a power play goal by Henrik Borgstrom. DU had a 5-on-3 advantage and with 31 seconds left in the period, Borgstrom put it into an open net from the right circle.
The Broncos tied it up early in the second period when Dries batted the puck into the net while falling to the ice in the left circle. Paul Stoykewych and Lawton Courtnall both tallied assists on Dries' third goal of the season.
WMU took its only lead of the game, 2-1, at 9:49 in the second period on a power play goal by Iacopelli. Western Michigan had a 5-on-3 advantage and the Chicago Blackhawks draft pick ripped one in from the right circle.
Denver tied it up at 14:09 in the second period when Jarid Lukosevicius tipped in a shot by Will Butcher and past Gorsuch to make it 2-2.
Dylan Gambrell added his second goal of the weekend for the game-winner early in the third period. At 2:29 Gambrell ripped one from the right circle and into the net. Bogstrom and Butcher both tallied assists on the goal.
Matt Marcinew added the nail in the coffin after a Bronco turnover with 4:55 left to play.
