KALAMAZOO, Mich. –
Caroline Rose went out a winner on her Senior Night as the Western Michigan volleyball team completed a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-15) sweep over the Toledo Rockets at University Arena on Saturday night. The Broncos improve to 14-15 overall on the season with the win and are now 10-4 in Mid-American Conference play.
The Broncos' lone senior had a key part in the winning effort, recording 13 digs and adding a pair of service aces to the Bronco effort. A veteran of 111 career matches, Rose is one of just 10 players in program history to record 1,000 career digs.
WMU recorded 11.0 team blocks, including three straight to end the third set and the match. Olivia Kofie and Nicole Kinser each recorded six total blocks while Sydney LeMay added five. LeMay was the offensive leader for the Broncos with a 12-2-21 attack line for a .476 hitting percentage. Bailey Schnell added nine kills and a .346 attack percentage. Hailey Knecht tied for the match-high with 16 digs and was perfect on the serve-receive in 14 receptions.
The emotional high point of the match came late in the third set when the Broncos full enforced their will on the Rockets, scoring nine of the final 11 points in the match to bring the crowd to their feet. Kofie ripped a kill to the back line to make it 18-13 and added another three points later to make it 20-14. LeMay factored into each of the last three points of the set, combining with Nicole Kinser and Mikaela Ryshytylo for blocks of Mary O'Connor, Saige Thomas and Annie Beasley, respectively, to finish off the 25-15 set win.
The Broncos dominated the beginning of the second set, taking a 16-6 lead on a block by LeMay and Ryshytylo that forced Toledo into a timeout. Kofie won the race to 20 with a kill that made it 20-12 but the Rockets inched their way back into the set. Kinser glanced an attack off a Rocket defender to force set point and LeMay bounced a kill off a slide play to clinch the set 25-19.
The closest set of the night was the first, with Toledo holding a lead as late as 21-20 in the opening game of play. A Rocket attack error was just the opening the Broncos needed, tying the score at 21 and putting WMU back in the driver's set. Schnell aced Maurissa Leonard to put her team ahead 22-21 and Kofie made it set point with a kill at 24-21. She combined with Ryshytylo for a block two points later, rejecting Thomas to win the set 25-22 and put the Broncos ahead 1-0 in the match.
