ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Western Michigan's five-game unbeaten streak came to a halt after falling to St. Cloud State 7-0 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Friday night.
Six different Huskies scored and Joey Benik tallied four assists on the night. Lukas Hafner got the start for the Broncos but was replaced by Frank Slubowski after his second goal allowed.
SCSU scored two goals in the first period, three in the second and two in the third period. Brooks Bertsch took advantage of a WMU turnover at 12:50 to give St. Cloud State a 1-0 lead. David Morley pushed the lead to 2-0 on a shot from the deep slot at 14:30.
A loose puck behind the net bounced to Joe Rehkamp on the right side and he put it past Slubowski to make it 3-0 at 4:10 in the second period. SCSU scored two goals in the final 1:10 of the period on a power play goal by Patrick Russell and a one-timer by Jonny Brodzinski to take a 5-0 lead into the third period. Kalle Kossila and Morley each added goals in the third period.
The two teams square off for the final time during the regular season on Saturday at 8 p.m.
