KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A shootout goal by Josh Pitt clinched the extra point for Western Michigan after a 1-1 tie with 15/14 St. Cloud State. A late goal by the Broncos' Will Kessel pushed the game into overtime at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.
Lukas Hafner had 21 saves and held the Huskies scoreless through a six round shoot out. The Broncos (3-6-1, 1-4-1-1 NCHC) trailed heading into the third period until Kessel's goal at 2:57. Chris Dienes got the puck down low to Frederik Tiffels on the left edge of the slot. Tiffels' shot was blocked by SCSU goaltender Charlie Lindgren but Kessel was there to put in the rebound to tie the game 1-1. All three players extended point streaks on the goal.
The Broncos penalty kill kept SCSUs first ranked National Collegiate Hockey Conference power play 0-3 on the night.
The Huskies lone goal on the night was scored after a scramble in the slot by Kalle Kossila from Andrew Prochno and Patrick Russell at 15:29 in the second period.
WMU outshot SCSU 23-22 on the night, including a 15-5 edge in the third period.
Western Michigan travels to Oxford, Ohio on Nov. 21 to take on 7/7 Miami at 7:35 p.m.
