TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Western Michigan women's track and field team finished up competition at the Toledo Invitational on Friday afternoon with the Broncos taking first place in six more events.
Technical difficulties prevent the results from being released until Saturday afternoon but
Iris Campbell was once again the star of the show on Friday. Campbell, including Thursday's 400m hurdle performance, finished the weekend with four event titles.
Campbell took titles in the long jump, the 100m hurdles and the 200m dash on the day. In the long jump she reached a personal-best distance of 19 feet 9.5 inches. The distance was good enough to also surpass teammate
Ashley Hunault for the top mark in the Mid-American Conference. She also holds the top mark in the 400m hurdles.
Even strong head winds could not slow Campbell, or the Broncos, down in the 100m hurdles. WMU took the top three spots in the event with Campbell leading the way at 14.04 seconds, matching her season's best. Behind her was
Chiara Allen at 14.68 seconds and
Amanda Fenton in third at 14.75.
Campbell's final title came in the 200m dash with a time of 24.29 seconds. WMU's
Leya Munwam took third place with a personal-best time of 25.29 in the first time she ran the event this season. Allen also placed well, running in fourth with a time of 25.60.
The Bronco throwers took the top four spots in both the discus and the shot put. Senior
Sarah Morris took first in the discus with a distance of 166 feet and was followed by
Stephanie Mitchell,
Andrea Hiler and
Kaylee Finney. Mitchell's reached a personal-best distance of 158 feet, 7 inches with her second place finish and
Kaylee Finney broke 150 feet for the first time in her career.
It was Mitchell that took first place in the shot put with a distance of 47 feet 10.5 inches and was followed by
Chelsea Gerbers, Hiler and Finney. Gerbers and Finney each reached personal-bests in the event with Gerbers reaching 44 feet, 7 inches.
WMU's final title came in the 1,500m run with
Samantha Tomerlin turning in the second-best time in school history at 4:26.37. Her big personal best and MAC leading time came on the heels of a commanding lead with few pushing her. Sophomore
Rachel Whitley came in second place with a time of 4:33.31.
"Sam right now has probably the best range of any distance runner in the MAC," said head coach
Kelly Lycan. "She can be competitive all the way from the 800m run to the 10k and not many can do that."
In the 400m dash the the Broncos took second, third and fourth place with
Ariel Arnold leading the way with a personal-best time of 57.14 seconds.
Brittany Calhoun took third at 57.48 and
Aisha Hodge in fourth with a personal-best 57.94.
"We had a whole lot of season and personal best marks today and that is exactly what you want to do going into the MAC Championship," Lycan added. "I am looking forward to next weekend. I think we have a good chance of a lot of people scoring some serious points for us."
The MAC Championships begin on Thursday at Northern Illinois.
