EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team posted multiple top-10 marks in program history this afternoon at the Spartan Invite.
The 1500m crew was fantastic, spearheaded by
Ava Kurczewski. She moved into sixth in program history and won the event with a time of 4:27.59. Behind her,
Lily Overton was able to collect a time of 4:33.60.
Rebekah Asselin (4:39.17, PR),
Madison Clor (4:47.86, PR),
Larissa McGrath (4:50.02),
Joy Evans (4:56.31) and
Lauren Sancrant (5:04.86) also ran well in the race.
Then, in the 3K steeplechase,
Kaelin Hughes was able to win the event in her debut. She recorded a time of 11:00.19 to move into ninth in program history.
Madison Zarembski was just behind her in second with a time of 11:03.01.
Lara Machado Pereira was fifth with a time of 11:26.64.
Continuing with the distance events, Kurczewski,
Emma Henkel and Overton ran well in the 800. Kurczewski was third with a PR time of 2:10.29, Henkel earned a time of 2:13.47 and Overton notched a PR time of 2:15.59.
To close out the distance events,
Shannon Gillahan produced a PR in the 5K. She crossed the finish line in a time of 18:26.52.
Moving to the sprints, hurdles and jumps,
Mickaliliah Vassell claimed second place in the 400-meter hurdles. She was able to register a time of 1:02.97. Then, in the 100-meter hurdles,
Jade Celestine was third with a time of 15.34.
In the long jump,
Layla Wallace had a top jump of 5.39 meters. That was good for third place. To close out the meet, WMU's 4x400 relay team was able to earn second place. The quartet crossed the finish line in a time of 3:57.02.

Western Michigan is back in action at the Duke Invitational next weekend. The meet runs from April 9-11.
