RALEIGH, N.C./KENNESAW, Ga. -- The Western Michigan track and field team had a strong opening weekend to the outdoor season, with multiple athletes posting top-10 marks in program history.
The distance squad was sensational at the Raleigh Relays, beginning with
Ava Kurczewski and
Lily Overton in the 3K steeplechase. Kurczewski finished with a PR time of 10:35.20 to move up to third in program history, while Overton's PR time of 10:35.36 moved her to fourth in school history.
Not to be outdone,
Lillian Zelasko had a great race in the 10K. She finished with a time of 34:05.03 to move into second all-time in Bronco history. Then, in the 5K,
Madison Zarembski was strong, as she posted a time of 17:08.18.
Kaelin Hughes (17:15.54) and
Larissa McGrath (18:01.68) weren't far behind her, notching great times in the event.
Moving on to the 1500,
Emma Henkel was able to produce an incredible time. She crossed the finish line in 4:42.20. To close out the meet,
Rebekah Asselin (2:15.95) and
Joy Evans (2:16.06) were competitive with some of the nation's top runners in the 800.
Moving to the Don McGarey Invitational, the throws group had some standout performances.
Tess Van Dyk (2nd, 14.15 meters),
Lane Hagens (3rd, 14.07 meters) and
Sierra Sommers (4th, 13.85 meters) dominated the field in the shot put.
The trio followed that up with more great results in the discus. Van Dyk claimed third with a throw of 44.59 meters, Sommers finished in fifth with a mark of 44.27 meters and Hagens was eighth with a mark of 39.12 meters.
Finally, Sommers was the lone Bronco to compete in the hammer throw. She had a great showing, posting a top mark of 48.49 meters to claim eighth place.
