SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Western Michigan track and field indoor season has come to and end as the the 4x400m relay team fell short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
The team of
Andrea Arnold,
Ashley Hunault,
Iris Campbell and
Leya Munwam finished with a season-best time of 3:38.53 that will place them among the top 25 nationally, but short of their NCAA qualifying goals.
"We were a little disappointed but with the adversity this group has dealt with so far this season it's not bad go out with your best performance on the year," said head coach
Kelly Lycan.
The Broncos got out to a good lead with an opening leg by Arnold and then handed the baton to Hunault. Baylor caught up to Hunault as WMU had exchange problems between Hunault Campbell. Campbell ran a blazing split of 53.1 seconds to give WMU the lead back. Munwam ran the anchor leg but was up against Baylor's Diamond, a 400m runner qualified for the NCAA Championships, and was unable to hold her off. The Broncos took second in their heat and eighth overall.
Another top season-ending performance was put in by sophomore
Rachel Whitley. Whitley ran a personal-best time of 2:09.10 in the 800m run, taking 12th overall in a loaded field. It was the first time in her career that she broke the 2:10 mark.
"Every time she gets a chance to run in a strong field like that it is a great experience for her," added Lycan. "She is starting to get comfortable in really strong fields and its a good sign for us in the outdoor season and years to come."
