TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Western Michigan track & field team wrapped up the final day of the Alabama Relays with wins in the 4x400m relay and the sprint medley relay on Sunday evening.
Iris Campbell opened up the 4x400m race giving the Broncos a lead it never relinquished.
Ashley Hunault extended WMU's lead in the second leg and freshman
Andrea Arnold kept the lead before
Leya Munwam finished it off. Combined they ran a time of 4:40.92, just under four seconds faster than second place Alabama.
"We were hoping we could get down here and get some decent weather," said head coach
Kelly Lycan. "we got that and a lot of good marks on the board to start off early in the season."
The Broncos dusted the competition in the 1,600m sprint medley as well. Hunault and
Stephanie Okolo both ran blazing 200m legs, while Arnold was called on once again for a 400m leg and sophomore
Rachel Whitley closed out the race on the 800m anchor leg. Combined they ran a time of 4:02.34, just over 10 seconds faster than second place Arkansas State.
Western Michigan also took second place in the shuttle hurdle relay. Campbell,
Whitney Freeman,
Chiara Allen and
Amanda Fenton combined for a time of 58.67 seconds, falling just two seconds shy of hosts Alabama.
"For this early in the season I think 58.67 is a pretty decent time," added Lycan. "It was a few seconds faster than we ran here last season so it's definitely a good way to start the season."
Western Michigan also took fifth place in the 4x100, fifth in the 4x200, fourth in the 4x800, fifth in the 4x1,500 and third in the distance medley relay.
The lone solo competitor on the day was senior
Linsay Bloor. Bloor took seventh overall in the javelin with a distance of 126 feet.
Western Michigan heads to Eastern Illinois for a two-day meet on Friday.
