KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan University's hockey team led eighth-ranked Notre Dame after two periods, but a two-goal third period by the Irish handed the Broncos a 3-2 loss in front of 3,876 at Lawson Arena Friday night.
WMU senior
Max Campbell scored both Bronco goals on senior night to earn his 100th career point, but third period goals by Jeff Costello and Anders Lee propelled the Irish to the victory.
Jerry Kuhn made 26 saves in net for Broncos, falling to 8-5-6 on the season. The loss drops WMU into 5th place in the CCHA at 9-9-9-5 in league play and 15-10-10 overall.
Lee scored two goals for Notre Dame, which also got 16 saves from netminder Mike Johnson. The CCHA-leading Irish improved to 18-6-3-2 in conference play and 21-9-5 overall.
Notre Dame seized the first lead of the game just 1:31 into the contest when Lee deflected a shot from the blue line past Kuhn. It was the 20th goal of the season for the freshman, which was assisted by Sean Lorenz and T.J. Tynan.
A great hustle play by
Greg Squires in the neutral zone set up the Broncos first goal of the night 10:09 into the first period. Squires chipped the puck through the neutral zone along the boards, shook off a check from an Irish defender and moved the puck ahead to Campbell who was streaking up the right wing. Campbell skated in and fired a wrister from the circle past Johnson for his 15th goal of the season. Squires picked up the assist on the tally, which knotted the score at one-apiece.
Physical play from both teams resulted in roughing after the whistle penalties, but neither team was able to capitalize on the four-on-four opportunity. Four saves by Kuhn late in the period kept the Irish off the board on their first power play of the night. Each team was 0-for-1 on the power play in the period.
Campbell struck again for his second goal of the night at the 15:40 mark of the second period, this time on the power play. The senior won a puck battle on the right boards back to
Dennis Brown, who swung a pass to a
Matt Tennyson, who corralled the puck between the circles. Tennyson's wrist-shot attempt was blocked by an Irish defender, but Campbell picked up the puck on the right doorstep and flipped the rebound top-shelf for his 100th career point. The goal from the tough angle was Campbell's 16th of the season. WMU finished 1-of-3 on the power play on the night.
Equally important as Campbell's goal in the period were two power-play kills by the Broncos. WMU held the Irish to just two shots total on its two power-play attempts in the period, while capitalizing on 1-of-2 power play attempts of their own.
Costello knotted the score at 2-2 at the 4:07 mark of the third period, chipping a top-shelf goal past Kuhn. The goal was the 11th of the season for Costello and was assisted by Ryan Guentzel and Joe Lavin.
Lee's game-winner came on the power play at the 15:03 mark of the third period. A centering feed by Billy Maday was knocked in by Lee for his second goal of the night and 21st of the season. Riley Sheehan was also credited with an assist. The goal spoiled an otherwise good effort by the Broncos on the penalty kill, which held the Irish to 1-of-4 on the power play.
The Broncos will look to rebound and close out the regular season with a victory tomorrow night in South Bend against the Irish. Face-off is set for 7:05 p.m., with live coverage being provided by the Bronco Radio Network. A victory for WMU would clinch a fourth-place finish in the CCHA, a first-round CCHA Tournament bye, and home-ice for its second round matchup.
